Water-soluble antioxidant profile
Brunswick Laboratories is capable of quantifying the individual water-soluble antioxidants in natural products or physiological fluids. (See also, Individual Antioxidant Profile - Natural Products.)
Vitamin C: Vitamin C is the essential water-soluble antioxidant in serum as it can not be synthesized from its precursor glucose. Vitamin C is derived from citrus fruits. Vitamin C serum levels in the high-normal range can be achieved by consuming various citrus fruits or taking supplements. To maintain serum levels in the high-normal range can be archived with supplements or by eating various citrus fruits.
Uric acid: Uric acid is a very efficient scavenger of free radicals. The high level of circulating uric acid plays an important role in the prevention of cancer and aging, and may explain why humans and higher primates live longer than prosimians in which the circulating level is tenfold lower.
Glutathione: Reduced glutathione is a very important endogenous antioxidant and is involved in several reactions in the body. Its concentration is typically 5 mM in most cells, maintaining a strong reducing environment. Reduced glutathione detoxifies hydrogen peroxide and also participates in transport of amino acids across cell membranes.
