Brunswick Laboratories is an independent, full-service bioanalytical laboratory specializing in the testing and research of antioxidants and other phytonutrient, oxidative stress, anti-inflammatory, synthetic and natural compounds. We are recognized internationally by leading health research institutions and companies in the nutraceutical, food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. We are a pioneer in the research and services related to antioxidants, phytochemicals, and oxidative stress reduction, and have earned respect and trust based on the contributions we have made in this field. Our name is synonymous with innovation and the development of "superfoods" like blueberries, acai, and cocoa.
Formerly founded in 1997, Brunswick Laboratories Inc. (formerly LLC) had started its early stage research and investigative work in the form of its sister branch Medical Products Mfg. LLC., and started building its intellectual property portfolio and numerous industry golden standard methods in nutraceutical product investigation. For the past decades, Brunswick Labs has led the way in quantifying the antioxidant capacity of foods and nutrients, and other health-related materials such as substances help reducing inflammation, reducing metabolic syndrome, managing diabetic conditions, and controlling weight.
Working closely with the USDA, Brunswick Labs improved and validated a method called ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) as a standard for measuring antioxidant power. At present, ORAC is the commercial method of choice in the food and nutrition industries. Today, our innovations span to the suite of oxidative stress reduction studies, anti-inflammatory analysis, and general phytonutrient analysis both in vitro and biological environments. We guide novel food and nutraceutical products from in vitro analysis to pilot and full scale clinical studies to identify and support their health functions. Our goal is continuing to help clarify the relationship between nutrition, environment and disease.
James G. Nichols
Founder and President
Jim spent over 40 years in the Medical Device and Laboratory Services Industry, specializing in the areas of blood chemistry, peritoneal dialysis, prostate and breast cancer, vision correction, cardiac assessment and emergency life saving(CPR) apparatus, as well as laboratory testing services for the nutrition and wellness industries. He held management positions at Corning Glass Works, VWR Scientific, was a member of The Office of the President of American Optical Corporation, President of Foster Medical Corporation, President of Microwave Medical Corporation. Jim attended Vanderbilt University and received his B.S Degree in Biology and Chemistry from Valdosta State University. He is a native of Valdosta, Georgia and an U.S. Army Officer during the Viet Nam War.
Jin Ji, PhD, MA/Management

Dr. Jin Ji is a creative technology business leader focusing on the identification and development of advanced technologies in food, nutritional, biomedical, and nanotechnology industries. Having gone through all stages of a commercial product and service from an idea on a piece of napkin, to raising venture funding, through R&D to an end product and service, Dr. Ji brings with her expertise in technology development, business operation, and market identification in the high tech industry in the United States.
At Brunswick Labs, Dr. Ji leads operation, marketing, and technology development. Dr. Ji combines her biomedical research experiences with in-depth food/nutrition investigation knowledge at Brunswick Labs to further the investigation at Brunswick Labs onto a more sophisticated, clinical and pre-clinical studies backed stage. Prior to Brunswick Labs, Dr. Ji was a Co-founder and Chief Science Officer of Lightwave Power, Inc., a venture-backed US private nanotechnology company. Earlier in her career, Dr. Ji served as a Research Faculty at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Ji has 15+ years of experience in technology commercialization effort for a number of leading international institutes including Smith Group PLC (London Stock Exchange: SMIN), Harvard Medical School, and Harvard Institute of Proteomics.
Born in Shanghai, China, Dr. Ji holds PhD in BioAnalytical Chemistry from University of New Orleans and Masters in Management from Harvard University. She has authored over 30 patents, publications and proposals in the field of nutraceutical, biomedical, nano-optics, and renewable energy. Jin has lived and worked in US, Singapore, Germany, and China, and is well versed in both western and eastern cultures, business environments and markets.
Ronald L. Prior, PhD
Dr. Ron Prior is a scientific leader in nutraceutical industry who has focused on health effects of dietary fruits and vegetables for the past 30 years. His work in developing analytical techniques to quantitate phytochemicals in fruits and vegetables led to the expansion of the flavonoid database in the USDA Food Nutrient Database with the addition of data on anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins and antioxidant capacity (ORACFL). This has provided the first comprehensive set of phytonutrient data in commonly consumed foods in the U.S., and has made it possible to compute dietary intakes of these phytochemicals in several epidemiology and other clinical studies. Furthermore, Dr. Prior’s research has provided leadership in understanding the metabolism of anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins during the absorption process and the phenolic acids and other metabolites that are produced in the gastrointestinal tract as a result of microbial metabolism.
Dr. Prior has published more than 220 articles in peer reviewed scientific journals and has served on the editorial board of the Molecular Nutrition and Food Research and of the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry and as a reviewer for a number of scientific journals. In 2006, Dr. Prior received the Alex Wetherbee Award from the North American Blueberry Council for his contributions to the blueberry industry. In 2012 received the James Joseph Research Award from the Highbush Blueberry Council in recognition of his research on fruits and vegetables. In 2006, Dr. Prior was ranked as the top-cited author in agricultural sciences by Science Watch during the period of 1999-2006, and he is coauthor on a classic paper (“The Chemistry Behind Antioxidant Capacity Assays”) which has been highlighted in Science Watch in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011.
Dr. Prior received his Ph.D. in Nutrition and post-doctoral training in Comparative Gastroenterology from Cornell University.
Jun Xian, PhD
Dr. Jun Xian leads Brunswick Laboratories' technical services in biological, clinical and pharmaceutical applications. Dr. Xian is also the Founder and President of New Era Pharma (NEP), a contract research organization (CRO) specializing in early drug discovery analytical services for biotech and pharmaceutical industries. Prior to Brunswick Labs, Dr. Xian served as the Associate Director of Partner Center for Drug Discovery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a Harvard Medical School-affiliated hospital, and Assistant Director of Cancer Drug Discovery at Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center. Dr. Xian participated in building two drug discovery programs in Harvard and its affiliated hospitals, and completed more than 30 projects.
Dr. Xian obtained his PhD in Chemistry from Wichita State University and completed his postdoctoral training in Biology from California Institute of Technology. He has 25+ years of experience in drug discovery and has built multiple drug discovery platforms. He is an expert in early drug discovery from target validation, biological assay design, HTS (high throughput screening), lead optimization, animal studies, to clinical studies.
